We were privileged this week to have a couple over to our house who will be living in Africa for the next few years, and a couple who will be living in South East Asia for the next few years. As we visited with these two different couples, it was fun to see their unique strengths and personalities that will equip them for the job set before them. One of them talked on hobbies and as they were talking they just light up like a light bulb.
Seeing the reaction to the hobby question got me to thinking, hobbies are part of who we are, they are little things in our lives that are unique to us and can bring joy, relaxation, and creativity into your life. One of my boys is into drumming, if he has no drum.... no problem as anything can be a drum, we are happy to be able to bring his conga drum and his electric drum set with us to Singapore. My older son is really into computers and video creativity, editing etc... my husband likes to read, explore nature and work on the computer.
Today I decided that I just could not go a whole year with out spinning wool into yarn. There really is no way to ship my spinning wheel over so I will bring my drop spindle with me. I visited my local fiber shop and found some beautiful merino fiber that will spin up nicely then I can knit it up into some socks. When your hobby is spinning and knitting, it is weird to think you will do that on a tropical island after all you would not knit a blanket as it would be across your lap and is very hot so socks it is for the next few years, let's see how creative I can get.
I am thankful for those "space saver" bags as they really do work and they shrunk my fiber down nicely. If you were moving to a foreign land for two years what kind of things would you bring as your hobby, it is part of who you are.
